Postoperative Instructions to Minimize Sinus Perforation

Your upper tooth/teeth were in very close proximity to the maxillary sinus. Although there was no sinus perforation noted at the time of the extraction, the following instructions are recommended for a minimum of one week in order to help prevent a postoperative sinus perforation.

*DO NOT BEND OVER AT THE WAIST.

*NO HEAVY LIFTING.

*NO SPITTING.

*NO STRAWS.

*SNEEZE WITH YOUR MOUTH OPEN.

*DO NOT BLOW YOUR NOSE OR USE NASAL SPRAYS (OTHER THEN THOSE PRESCRIBED BY YOUR DOCTOR).

*TAKE PRESCRIPTIONS AS DIRECTED.

*DO NOT SMOKE.

Following the instructions above will help to avoid a sinus perforation by avoiding increased pressure within the sinus. If you notice airflow or fluids flowing between your mouth and your sinus you may have developed a sinus perforation. Please call the office if this occurs. The sinus perforation will normally heal by following the instructions listed above, but the doctor may also wish to prescribe medications to aid in healing such as additional antibiotics, Sudafed and Ocean Spray.
